PE
At St Louis the intent of teaching Physical Education is to provide children with the skills, knowledge and understanding required to make a positive impact in their own physical health and well-being. We aim for every child to be happy, healthy and confident, both now and in the future.
We want all children to develop the core memories and fundamental movement skills within a fun and engaging environment, in order to engage in physical activities for life. Children will experience a wide variety of personal, social, physical, cognitive and creative skills which will enhance life-long fitness and life choices. PE can challenge and promote self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving. It can teach children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities. At St Louis we believe that every child is unique, with their own strengths and talents. It is therefore important that we recognise Physical Development as an area that needs as much nurturing as anything else within our curriculum.
PE at St Louis is taught by a combination of class teachers, PE specialists and qualified sports coaches. Children have equal opportunities to take part in a range of sports and physical activities within a positive and supportive environment, where effort as well as success is recognised. Children are encouraged to participate in physical activity regularly throughout their day to day life.
At St Louis, the PE curriculum is unique and child centred, to ensure that the PE experience is transformed for every child. Individual skills are developed and learning takes place through competitive, team and individual sports and activities. Children with additional needs are provided with appropriate support to enable them to take part and gain confidence in skills, understanding and motivation. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.
Children gain experience of a variety of fundamental skills including agility, balance, co-ordination and fitness. At St Louis, we also focus on the personal, social, physical, cognitive and creative skills skills that can be developed through Physical Education. During KS2, children will have a series of structured swimming sessions.
We offer a range of specialist PE opportunities for our children throughout the school. These include:
